“… I think we all put too much emphasis on meeting the ‘right’ people - i.e. currently successful people…. I think it’s smarter to think long term.   Make contacts among your peers.  Get in good with writers you actually like and respect before they become the next big thing.  Which, again, requires making the effort with people who may or may not ever be able to give you a job.  Cast your networking net as wide as possible.  Be nicer than you have to be and do favors for anyone you can.  Basically, be the person everyone else wants to schmooze with….”
